flodesk logo

Email + Link in bio + CHECKOUTS

flodesk*

What I like most: It's beautiful, easy, makes me want to create more emails, and I can sell stuff too (free or paid, digital or IRL). It's also woman-owned and managed.

My absolute favorite email provider. I was attracted by the beauty and ease of the templates and the clean interface. I've stayed for the value and enhanced features, e.g., email, workflows, automations, and segmentation. For a little more, selling physical products, digital downloads, events, or services. Perfect for startups without a website! The best part, it inspires me to send emails because it is such a joy to use. BTW, over the decades I've used aWeber, Constant Contact, GetResponse, iContact, and Infusionsoft (now Keap)

web Hosting

Bluehost**

What I like most: It's a respected, dependable WordPress-hosting option with email, too.

The WordPress webhosting platform I've used for almost a decade. Relatively easy to use. It is also the platform for my business email. Good value for the first year. Better if you buy in 3-year plan packages. Customer service is always pleasant but inconsistent. Better when you get a more seasoned rep, whether by chat or phone. Yet, they are a strong, well-known, fast provider.

Mighty Networks black circle logo

Community + courses

Mighty Networks**

What I like most: It's woman-owned, offers the option to offer a true community experience + courses.

Update: prices have risen, and customer service is declining. Unlimited options are history (unless grandfathered).

I've been with Mighty since before they offered courses. The opportunity to offer courses and have a true community was very attractive. Being owned by a woman was also a huge plus. In addition to the unlimited members and spaces. Over the decades, I've used Thinkific, Teachable, Kajabi, WordPress plugins (e.g., LearnDash & OptimizePress), and forums (e.g., Jing). I believe Mighty still offers a community experience superior to the aforementioned platforms. However, their customer service and many features have gone the way of AI, becoming slow, frustrating, or incorrect, and on occasion, taking feedback personally and responding in a combative manner. I no longer believe the value is there for small, ethical businesses. Now that prices have risen, and unlimited has gone the way of the dinosaur, I see many choosing Circle.so for its speed, simplicity, and course offering. Since I have invested significant time and content + have early adopter, grandfathered pricing, I'm taking my time to exploring options.

Graphic design

Canva*

What I like most: Free or paid, this is a comprehensive option to create all of my visuals, static or active, images or guides, in whatever size or format I desire, with relative ease.

Canva has been my go-to for promotional and course images for over a decade, upgrading to Pro about 5 years ago. The ease of use and plethora of features have kept me there. You can even create your brand kit and upload fonts. A graphic design platform that provides tools for creating social media graphics, presentations, postcards, promotional merchandise, and websites. Now, you can even create a course. I even use it for personal images. It's fun and easy to get started, with a myriad of YouTube tutorials to uplevel your Canva skills.

online quizzes

Interact

What I like most: I was new to online quizzes and found this a relatively short learning curve with many options and templates.

A tool for creating online quizzes. It's relatively easy to use, with limited customizability and excellent email and website integration. You can segment by replies or even questions, and link individual responses or quiz results to segments in your email provider. Analytics are pretty helpful

scheduling

Satori*

What I like most: In addition to the many features for coaches and solopreneurs, this is one of the most ethical companies I've used, which is 1000% dedicated to customer success. I can schedule 1:1 Zoom support whenever I need it. I also have access to every upgrade, even though I'm on a grandfathered founders' price plan.

I've used the Satori app since it was in beta in 2011. I'll admit that being a YINpreneur, the name Satori felt aligned with my business intention. chill and offered a pre-launch price that he promised to keep for the life of the software. He's kept his word, even as the product has grown significantly. It presents as a streamlined, all-in-one coaching platform, offering individual or group scheduling options, discovery questions and reminders, a minimal CRM, and a customer hub with the ability for your clients to communicate with you by messaging or uploading notes. The ability to create custom billing cycles, payment plans, and discounts, then automate invoices, is unique and powerful. For entrepreneurial ease, customise your availability to suit your work style, plan travel, and schedule breaks individually or by segment. BTW, over the decades I've used TimeTrade, and tried Calendly.

webinar platform

Crowdcast*

What I like most: This is my absolute favorite platform for hosting a webinar. The Q&A, ability to bring people to the "stage", and post-webinar access (including evergreen) are the best on the market. As is their customer service.

I love Crowdcast. It is a model company with a superior product and customer service. The owner offers a monthly community gathering to answer questions and receive suggestions. It is an online platform for hosting live-streamed webinars, online conferences, and virtual events with the best interactive tools on the market, including chat, Q&A, and polls before and during the event.. Q&A: post-event, I can click on each question to go directly to the answer. Attendees can communicate via the messaging feed before, during, and after the webinar. After the event, you have the option to download the video for display in the location of your choice or promote it as evergreen with the original registration link. No need to create another. BTW, over the decade, I have used Zoom webinar and GetResponse, tried WebinarJam and Webex.

video & screen recording

Camtasia

What I like most: I can record my screen, create and edit videos with or without me on screen or voiceover, with a myriad of relatively easy-to-use professional-level assets.

Camtasia, by TechSmith, has been my go-to for creating, editing, and screen recording videos since 2010. It's gotten easier to use over the years. It is a downloadable app for Mac or PC. I can also create videos from scratch using my own videos and assets or Camatasia-supplied assets - stills and video options. There's a bit of a learning curve, but once you get comfy, you'll LOVE how easy it is to create and edit videos for tutorials, courses, marketing, and social media.

video hosting

Vimeo

What I like most: They are dependable for uploading videos to view on their platform or embed them where I wish, with the privacy access I select, including password protection.

I've depended on Vimeo to host my videos for links and embedding around the internet since 2009. It is an ad-free video platform that gets everything you need to host, manage, and share high-quality videos with anyone, anywhere.

screen recording & sharing

SnagIt

What I like most: The app sits on my desktop ready to grab stills or videos with a simple click, then edit or share as-is with a link. I can also tag, sort, and search.

SnagIt is my go-to for quick screen captures to use for informal how-to videos for clients and community members. It's easy to use and allows me to organize the screencasts for ease of reference and search. I have the choice to include myself in the screencast.

All-in-one website and e-shop

OptimizePress**

What I like most: OptimizePress is a dependable, easy to install, powerful WordPress page creator with drag-and-drop ease. I can create fairly professional-looking pages without web developer experience.

I've used OptimizePress for over a decade. It offers a solid product and accessible video tutorials to walk you through creation. It is considered the all-in-one page builder offering shared, VPS, WordPress and dedicated hosting. With it, I can create and launch landing pages, sales pages, funnels, and websites with a few clicks. OptimizePress made it possible for me to build my first online course, with drip content and passwords, long before there was Teachable or Kajabi.

wired mic

BlueYeti

What I like most: It's well-made, pretty good at noise-cancelling, and can be used on my desk or a boom arm.

I've used this mic for years for podcasting, Zoom meetings, webinars, live streaming, and voice-overs. The omnidirectional capacity enables it to work effectively for meetings with multiple people around the room or in interview mode. It can sit on my desk or be attached to a broadcast boom arm. It happens to be available in various colors and finishes. An affordable yet quality choice if you are getting started or want to upgrade your choice.

wireless mic

DJI MiC 2

What I like most: I'm new to wireless mics, and love this one. The noise-cancelling allowed me to record a meditation close to traffic noise without interference. And, it has the option to connect directly by USB or Bluetooth.

This is a compact Digital Wireless Microphone System/Recorder for Camera & Smartphone (2.4 GHz). I've been using it for about a year and have been very happy with the noise cancellation feature and ability to record directly to the mic. I mostly use it with my Insta360 Flo Pro gimball, and occasionally directly with my iPhone by wire or by USB. Unfortunately, the USB option does not allow for noise cancellation. You can purchase a single or a two-mic. I prefer the two-mic option as it comes with a protective recharging case.

smartphone gimbal

Insta360 Flow Pro

What I like most: I can walk slowly or quickly and create stable videos of myself or my surroundings. Add the DJI Mic, and I feel professional. It's light and easy to carry, hold, or simply use the included tripod.

I've used this gimbal for less than 1 year, and I love it. It's quick and easy to set up, and it folds so I can carry it in my smaller backpack. It's light and easy to carry or stand on the built-in tripod. The tripod feels a bit flimsy, but it's quite functional. The gimbal's stabilization feature is quite remarkable and produces smooth video, whether walking or running slowly. Although I don't often use the feature, this gimbal offers an AI-powered stabilizer that allows your smartphone to track the subject as it moves. Features include Apple DockKit enabled, 360º infinite pan tracking, 3-axis stabilisation, built-in tripod, portable & foldable. I use it outdoors while moving or indoors when I want to take advantage of the noise cancellation feature.

Scrivener app logo

WORDPROCESSING & PROJECT MGT

Scrivener

What I like most: My favorite app when I'm writing articles, starting a book, or organizing digital resources. The ease of research, creation, and publishing for Mac, PC, iOS, or Android are joyful.

(from website) "...designed for writers, particularly those working on long-form projects like novels, research papers, or screenplays. It helps writers organize notes, research, and manuscript sections in a structured way, making it a popular choice for those who prefer a more robust and feature-rich writing environment than standard word processors."

Each year, I conduct what I call a “vendor values audit”. It is challenging because we live in a commercially competitive society that promotes scarcity, and it takes time. Yet, the time spent allows me to feel good about using vendors that align with my values and offer ease as I create. My preference is vendors that are women or BIPOC-owned and managed, and meet my three "E's", Ethics, Ease, and Engagement.

Ethics of the owners and their representatives

I look at the corporation, its founders, board & corporate teams. I am not shy about reaching out to the respective owners and the HELP teams to learn more. My goal is to find out if they appear to prioritize their customers over their board or investors and value sustainable business ethics. Where possible, I will stay away from companies promoting disrespect, prejudice, or harm to people or the environment, e.g., consulting the BDS (boycott, divest, sanction) Movement list.

Ease of creation, use, and support

All this to say, I will not recommend a resource that I have not tried for at least 6 months. Most, I’ve used for over a decade, and stay with them because they are aligned with my values, or the ethical choice offering of the respective resource type is extremely limited or unaffordable, especially for start-ups.
